Overmolding
Overmolding combines a rigid substrate with a soft or special-purpose material. It is used for grips, seals, strain relief and parts where two materials do different jobs.
What we review
- Substrate material and surface preparation
- Overmold material: TPE, TPU or another specified grade
- Bond strength and mechanical interlocking
- Gate location and flow around the substrate
- Tool design: shut-offs, seals and insert placement
Typical applications
- Handheld device grips and soft-touch surfaces
- Seals and gasket features on enclosures
- Strain relief and cable overmolds
- Two-material parts for consumer and industrial products
What to send
Substrate drawing, overmold material or performance requirement, quantity and assembly requirements. If the bond or material is open, describe the working environment.
FAQ
Can you overmold onto an existing part?
Possibly. Send the substrate drawing and material; we will review bond, tooling and process before quoting.
Which materials can be overmolded?
TPE and TPU are common. The grade and bond are confirmed against the substrate and application.
