Two-shot molding
Two-shot molding produces a part with two materials or colors in one cycle. It can remove a secondary assembly step, but the tool and machine requirements are higher than a single-shot mold.
What we review
- Material compatibility and bond
- Part geometry and shut-off between shots
- Tool design: rotating platen, core-back or transfer
- Machine capability and cycle time
- Volume: two-shot tooling usually needs a higher volume to justify
Typical applications
- Hard/soft grips and handles
- Multi-color cosmetic parts
- Sealed or gasketed enclosures
- Parts that would otherwise need assembly
What to send
3D file, both materials or performance requirements, quantity, and which surfaces are cosmetic. We will review whether two-shot or overmolding is the better route.
FAQ
Is two-shot always better than overmolding?
No. Two-shot reduces assembly but needs a more complex tool and higher volume. Overmolding can be better for lower volume or simpler parts.
Can you quote both routes?
Yes. Send the part and volume; we can compare two-shot, overmolding and assembly.
